Trinity School, Carlisle
A true partnership that adds value for Trinity School
The Solution deployed?
Our IT partnership with Trinity has built up over our years of working together. What began as the implementation of Trinity's internet and connectivity infrastructure, developed to include their wireless and security solutions. We then implemented data backup and data recovery solutions. Following a natural disaster in Carlisle causing a flood, we helped the school recover and worked with the Leadership and IT Teams to create a Disaster Recovery Plan. We continue to work with the team at Trinity on their ongoing IT Strategy and Planning.

About Trinity School
Trinity School is a mixed Church of England Academy for 11-18-year-olds situated in Carlisle, Cumbria. They offer a broad range of curriculum choices and wider activities to enhance the learning and development of their students.
Trinity put their students at the heart of everything they do, not just their academic achievements, but ensuring their well-being and wider development. Trinity School are passionate about ensuring their pupils are well-rounded individuals who leave them with the values, knowledge and skills to prepare them for their future.
Following major IT investment as part of a rebuild project, Trinity School decided it was the right time to look for a new IT partner.
They weren't satisfied with the amount of support they'd been receiving from a previous provider. Prior to this investment, they'd suffered with a poor, unreliable network and needed an IT partner that would work with them to continue to develop a robust and trusted network.
The team at Virtue Technologies got to work. We analysed their current network and listened to their needs. We were able to effectively translate the needs of Network Manager Sutherland Smith to the Finance and Leadership Teams and work with them all to provide great value solutions, fit for their educational environment.
We translated the needs of Network Manager Sutherland to the Finance and Leadership Teams.
We worked with them all to provide great value solutions.
“The team regularly liaise with our non-technical senior staff, and they’re very effective at communicating information clearly without using baffling technology speak,” says Network Manager Sutherland.
This in turn has helped the leadership team focus on leading teaching & learning, instead of worrying about the security, compliance, speed or reliability of IT.
It was important to the then Head Teacher, Derek Kay, that the infrastructure be robust to take the pain away from managing IT provision for Sutherland and the give the staff confidence in the use of technology.
By working with the team at Virtue, Trinity soon realised we were serious about being IT partners, not merely providers. We soon became trusted advisors which enabled Trinity School to embrace different, more effective ways of managing their IT infrastructure – with a focus on integration and a joined-up approach being one our key recommendations and an important factor in their upgrades. We also selected new hardware and software vendors, where it was appropriate, to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness, in both the short and long-term of the Trinity School network.
Trinity now have improved network performance, which was cost-effective to
build and maintain, and Virtue's help desk support.
Alongside the hardware and software provision, we also recommended that the school take up our Platinum support package. Trinity agreed, and now benefit from a dedicated help-desk team. Our help desk is manned by experienced engineers who provide advice and support to ensure fast and reliable resolution to issues. On top of this, Trinity also have direct contact with a dedicated help-desk manager who provides personalised support for more complex, significant projects.
- Faster user access
- Increased network up-time
- Increased redundancy of resources
- Reduced physical presence on site
- Easier day to day management due to improved integration
- Scope for future development and expansion
- Costs that were within budget and maximised
Strategy and long-term planning
In addition to the day-to-day support, Virtue Technologies also provide ongoing disaster recovery strategies for Trinity School.
In 2015, Storm Desmond, one of the worst storms to ever hit Cumbria, did extensive damage to Trinity School, resulting in flooding and no power.
They had 3 communications rooms underwater and over 100 workstations were lost to the floods. Our team arrived on site the very next day to develop and deliver a rescue plan. We're proud to say the core network was soon back up and running. We went on to put replacement infrastructure in place to allow the school to get back up and running again. In fact, Sutherland says Trinity "were the first network to be up in the city!” after the storm.
Once these immediate issues had been resolved, we worked with the school to develop a plan to maximise resilience against potential future floods. We successfully supported the school in obtaining funding to implement these plans. The devastation caused in 2015 is the reason we continue to strategise and plan for disaster recovery.
Our Relationship Today
We continue to work with Trinity School, helping them develop their Ofsted aligned IT strategy, while also supporting the management and delivery of that plan. Our track record of giving fixed costs and keeping to tight budgets means that we have the trust of not only Network Manager Sutherland Smith but also Head Teacher Joanne Hawkin, and School Business Manager Karen Rosary.
We work closely with Sutherland and his team, with support and installation of new kit to enable them to support and manage their IT estate more easily as we move forward together.
